What is PCOS?

PCOS stands for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

It is a disorder that causes cysts to form around the edges of the ovaries. This happens because of a imbalance of female sex hormones. Too much testosterone is produced causing unpleasant side effects, like excess hair in unwanted places making you feel slightly manly. Sometimes it leads to insulin resistance, causing weight gain.

Some of the common symptoms of PCOS are:
-Irregular or missed Menstrual cycles
-Excess hair growth under chin, on your chest, around the nipples, on the stomach, the inner thighs, and on your bum.
-Thinning hair on the head
-Enlarged ovaries (although you may not even know it)
-Weight gain
-Cravings for carbohydrates and sugar

Some other symptoms that may also be associated:
-Fatigue
-Moodiness
-Severe Pain in pelvis (this could be a cyst rupturing)
-Acne

Sounds great right? What woman doesn't want to look like a man and gain weight?

Okay, in all seriousness, PCOS is a very frustrating disorder because so little is known about it. Most doctors will put you on birth control to help regulate your menstrual cycles and possibly a medication to help with insulin resistance. Weight loss and exercise can help, but it may not cure it and it can be very difficult to lose the weight. If symptoms persist it can lead to infertility.

There is a lot more to learn about this disorder and through our own research and experiments, we are determined to find answers and share them with you as we go along.

Please remember,  we are not medical professionals, nor do we advise or prescribe you any type of medication or supplements. You should do your own research as well to figure out what is right for you. What might work for one of us may not work for you.
